How can we help?
Tanks that are vertically or individually vented require a catenary lightning protection system. Flammable gasses can drift as much as 10 ft into the surrounding air space and are susceptible to ignition should lightning strike near the flash area. The dimensions of a catenary system are calculated based off guidelines from the NFPA780 and the structure is built to intercept a direct lightning strike before it reaches the combustion zone and redirects that energy to the ground.
A catenary lightning protection system is successful when:
- the zone of protection is accurately calculated based off the highest point and layout of the tank battery, facility, and/or structure being protected.
- the properly rated lightning protection materials are utilized to create a low impedance path to the ground.
- bonded into a static protection system.
- properly maintained with semi-annual inspections.
Wind, rain, and other forces of mother nature can affect the integrity of catenary lightning protection systems over time. It is critical to have these sites inspected every six months.
