Behind the Inspections: A Conversation with Shawn Barber

Each team at Petro Guardian has worked hard to maintain our standing as an industry leader in lightning and surge protection for oil and gas companies. Over my time here at PG, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the standout individuals who not only make up that very team and truly make a difference. One individual that brings a unique touch and dedication to our company mission is Shawn Barber, the Compliance Officer for Petro Guardian Inspection. Shawn might come off as reserved at first, but get him talking, and you’ll discover a depth of knowledge and passion that’s inspiring. And in a testament to his manners, he will respond with a courteous “yes ma’am” or “yes sir,” even if he’s on the receiving end of constructive feedback. It’s these small details that make Shawn, well, Shawn.

During a recent conversation with him, I was able to learn details about his professional experience, as well as more personal traits and stories. One interesting fact? At one point, he was the proud owner of 23 reptiles, ranging from pythons to geckos.

Tell me a little about yourself.

I’m 27 years old and am originally from Kenner. I pretty much grew up in a mechanic shop, which is where my passion for vehicles stems from – especially Dodge Rams, first gens, and anything from ‘89 or earlier. After Katrina, we moved to the Northshore. Professionally, I’ve been a part of the Petro Guardian family for four years and currently oversee the inspections department.

What does a day in the life of a compliance officer for PGI look like for you?

I have a routine, which is important for inspections. You’re on constant rotation. I start by reviewing the facilities and dates of their inspections, go out and do the inspections, and once it’s done, I make the repair list for each site, and draft a report. And then the rotation begins again.

How do you spend your time when you’re not working or traveling?

I have three kids and a baby that was born in December. So, most of my time outside of work is spent with them. Plus, I’ve got six brothers, and we often get together. We might go fishing or just enjoy the outdoors. It’s all about family for me.

What’s a hidden talent of yours that might surprise the rest of us at Petro Guardian?

I’m an open book and a simple guy. People know I’m into mechanics and fishing. I’ll have to think on that one… I guess one thing people don’t really know is that I can Yo-Yo, and I’m pretty good at it.

What’s the best part about working with your team?

That one is easy. We’re like a family. They’re a bit of good-natured picking–I’m the ‘country boy’ of the office–but it’s all in good fun. Everyone genuinely supports and looks out for each other.

What is the most unexpected part of your job that people may not realize?

Unexpected dangers. You’re in the middle of the desert and sand, and rattle snakes will sneak up on you. I’ve come across a good number of them, and it becomes a matter of getting them to move along so I can keep on with my work.

When Shawn isn’t working on cars or with his family (and adorable newborn), he is working hard to make sure that your tanks are protected from possible lightning or static.
