Streamer Preventing Terminals (SPT) are designed to prevent the formation of streamers during the development of ground field. As a lightning downward leader is initiated and the electromagnetic field develops, the lightning protection system conductors are induced with current. Conventional lightning terminals experience the stress at the tip and generate upward streamers that have the capability to intercept the downward leaders. On the other hand, Streamer Prevention Terminals (SPT) do not experience any stress and generate adequate space charge that can both shield the terminal and prevent streamer formation. This technology has been successfully deployed in the oilfield for more than 25 years.
